Cities, scratch off nightscapes is a fairly novel art book giving you a dozen fairly iconic landmarks in various cities in which you have to scratch off the silver foil to reveal the colors underneath. You can think of it as a sort of art version of lottery scratchoffs.Each cityscape is printed on heavy stock matte black paper with the silver scratchoff foil subtly woven in. At the back of the book you will find a wooden stylus with which to scratch off the foil. The choice then is up to you on which areas to scratch off. You can scratch off all the foil the reveal the mostly yellow and orange colors underneath or if you prefer leave some silver foil in places to give these images your own feel.Make sure that you are on a flat hard surface when you are scratching the foil off as even though it is printed on heavy card, it isn't that difficult to scratch too hard and make a small tear in the paper. Up close the images actually don't look all that good when the foil has been removed but from a distance they take on a whole new light and are actually quite pretty.Are the final images worthy of framing and hanging on your wall? Well this would be an individual judgement call but to me the final images don't quite make that grade. Although, as mentioned, from a distance they are nice to look at, they just aren't of high enough quality.Unlike lottery scratchoffs where you can fairly much just take a coin and scratch over the whole card, these prints have some very fine areas to scratch and it will take you some time to complete each image. I would have liked to have seen a bit more color in the images to make them pop a little more.Overall I like the concept of how you can tailor the images to your own tastes by not scratching off all the silver foil but the overall results versus the amount of time you need to put into them doesn't quite cut it for me.
This was the first scratch-off book I purchased from Lago, I have been enjoying watching the images emerge ever since. Piece by piece, bit by bit, they emerge. For those starting out, this is not a beginner's book. The images are big and complex, requiring hours of careful scratching. To avoid frustration, I would recommend investing in a cheap set of fountain pens or calligraphy nibs, these will help you greatly to get the fine details.
Extremely detailed, and reminds me of elementary school art class! Resulting pictures are lovely, however I agree with prior reviews that this is quite advanced and after a while causes some eye strain. Wooden tool is ok, but point is not precise enough to etch level of detail required on the pictures. I will probably try to use a toothpick on the smaller areas going forward. I could see someone become frustrated if they don't have a lot of patience, as the etching process is very slow-going.
unless you have perfect vision you're not going to be able to do anything in this book at all I mean it's impossible I'm a graphic artist by trade I went to college and I'm nearsighted and I can draw and do like the best and most but I can't even do these I mean that's how bad this is this is impossible the lines are so so lowly lit that you can't even see what you're doing and they scratch so easily I mean it doesn't stop if you think that you know the lines are in there and that you can just do it you know and it will stop no it's this is impossible this book is a piece of junk I do not recommend it if you going to try something like this don't go with look like this you're throwing your money away
It came with a wooden tool for scratching. It would be nice if there was an option to purchase different sized tools. There is a sheet of thin paper between each. I'm assuming its to stop pages from possibly sticking together or scratching more than one page at a time. I have not had much time to really use the book as much as I'd like but it was fun when I did.
I was very disappointed. Almost every picture has scratches on it. Poor quality control. It was wrapped in plastic so the scratches occurred during manufacturing.
Pictures are fun to do if you like to work detailed pics. For fine lines I suggest getting a scratch awl. Available anywhere tools are sold. Get a cheap and light weight one. You can also use the metal pointy end of a compass. Use a soft touch when using metal ends.

Excellent for family art time, especially for a 7 year old daughter who wants to an artist, culinary chemist and a mother. Great entry level art, fun for almost all ages!!!
